Recent papers have reported developments in the concept of using an absolute total Lagrangian formulation in which the co-ordinates of a discretisation in a structural mechanics problem replace the conventional displacement vector of unknowns. We first present a position-based model for a thin shell. Initially, perfect elasticity was assumed, after which the model was modified to include the effect of plasticity, using the Ivanov yield function. We then describe a sensitivity calculation which relates the deformed and un-deformed shell configurations, first in the perfectly elastic, and then in the elasto-plastic case. An example is presented for various plasticities, in comparison with a finite difference check. Copyright © 2004 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. All rights reserved.
