Abstract

The photoelectrocatalytic oxidation of aqueous 4-nitrophenol (NP) solutions in a photo-electrochemical bubble column reactor (BCR) was discussed. It was found that the photocatalytic decomposition of 4-NP in reactors with a 4 dm 3 capacity can be increased by an applied field, and that the effect can be implemented, even for strongly absorbing solutions. It was also found that the application of an electric field significantly enhances the mineralization of 4-NP. The results show that activity of irradiated TiO 2 photoanodes towards a particular target species is a highly sensitive to the electrode structure and morphology.
