This paper explores and evaluates the business and distribution models of small independent record labels. Small independent record labels were chosen, as literature on the subject to date only explains the impact the Internet has had on the music industry from the major record labels' points of view. Our exploratory survey findings suggest that the Internet had a significant effect on small independent record labels. The paper discusses the implications of these early findings and suggests possible ways forward. We also present three case studies of emerging business models as a snapshot of the many, varied and often short-lived experiments in ICT-enabled business model construction and application that took place contemporaneously with the development of this exploratory paper. In conclusion, a necessarily brief overview of the peculiarities of the music industry, its past, present and future, are presented with a view to laying down groundwork for future exploratory studies.
