Gasification technology is central to a sustainable energy technology based on biomass. The application of Process Intensification to gasification system is a major advancement in which a number of unit operations, including the gasifier, gas and process water treatments and gas separation can be intensified and integrated thus making the entire plant cost effective, responsive to raw materials and societal needs. In order to achieve these intensified processes, several novel systems have been developed, including intensified catalysts, tar removal and process water clean-up technologies. These technologies are initially integrated in a 50 kWe gasifier - power plant and subsequently applied to a 1 MWe gasifier - power plant. The dynamics of the whole plant, gas quality, gas and process water emissions were continuously monitored and the results are compared with the small scale pilot plant as well as laboratory scale data where possible. © BHR Group 2005 Process Intensification 6.
