In this research a new generation semi-submersible which consists of rectangular pontoons and square columns was modelled. The proposed semi-submersible would be cheap and quick to build, based on standard cubic boxes constructed by stiffened flat panel line assembly techniques, as conducted in modern shipbuilding. The proposed semi-submersible could be utilised for production, drilling and accommodation. To evaluate the hydrodynamic viability of the proposed design, this paper will describe the hydrodynamic design calculations and the results of the correlation between the model test results and numerical predictions as well as the results of comparisons carried out with different designs.
