The development of cyanohydrin (CACHy) catalysts as commercial catalysts in the past decade is discussed. The first asymmetric addition of CACHy catalysts was catalyzed by a crude extract of almonds in 1908. CACHy catalysts are less reactive in the potassium cyanide system that with trimethyl cyanide. It is pointed out that the asymmetric addition of cyanide to aldehydes has been solved by the development of CACHy catalysts. These catalysts show tat high reactivity and enantioselectivity due their ability to activate and preorganize the components.
