A review of process intensification and miniaturization: Fundamentals, scope and applications

Abstract

The applications of Process Intensification and Miniaturization (PIM) now cover agricultural, biological, chemical, environmental and energy conversion technologies. The driving processing fields are often different and the magnitude of intensification is varied. PIM can deliver novel processes that are more cost effective and scale insensitive while delivering novel products and enabling platform for other disciplines. Such versatility indicates novelty and interdisciplinarity. However, the lack of understanding of the mechanisms in intensified processes, interactions between different processing fields and process-product interactions restricts our vision of PIM, its scope and predictive power. The objective of this review is to identify the underlying principles of intensification, intensification field - degree of intensification relationship, scope and restrictions of intensified processes and emphasize the importance of materials with well controlled micro-architecture with superimposed nano-structure in achieving intensification. The review will also cover unambiguous industrial applications of PIM in order to establish costcapacity relationship as this is the most important driving force for the take-up of the technology. Although most examples of PIM are in the form of unit operations, integration of intensified unit operations to achieve Intensified-Miniaturized Plants is the ultimate objective of this technology, the examples of which are now appearing.
