Capacity building in remote sensing is an important component of GOOS-Africa. This includes training future scientists and environmental managers in the use of satellite data. With this in mind, the UNESCO-Bilko programme, supported by Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, and the European Space Agency is developing teaching material for use in distance learning and through workshops and courses across Africa and worldwide. The Bilko programme is well suited for the African capacity building effort. The software is specially written for education use, and is supported by lessons that exemplify its power and come complete with images, palettes, formulae and other tools needed to complete the work. Software, lessons, images and other resources are all free to registered users and may be downloaded from the Bilko website at www.unesco.bilko.org. The Bilko software is easy to use, demands only moderate computer resources, and supports a number of data formats commonly used in remote sensing, including NetCDF, HDF, USGS MapGen format and Envisat N1 format. The lessons provide a step-by-step approach to data visualization and processing through hands on activities supported by background information that makes it suitable for users working alone or in groups without direct access to remote sensing expertise. Users wishing to arrange workshops, adapt existing teaching material or develop new lessons for use in their own courses may obtain help and support from the Bilko project office and editorial board - an international group of remote sensing experts with long experience of using Bilko in their own research and teaching.
