Abstract

Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) technique is introduced as an optimisation tool in minimising wave resistance of a ship’s hull. In the present study, ANN technique is implemented together with a computational flow solver based on low-Froude number theory, which uses source-panel method with Dawson’s algorithm. The present technique is applied to the aft form optimisation of a catamaran for minimum wave resistance. The resultant optimal form is compared with respect to the wave resistance characteristics with those of the original form as well as with those of the optimal form obtained alternatively by using Quadratic Programming with thin-ship theory. It is observed that the application of ANN technique for hull form optimisation, although still at its early stages of development, can be noticeably successful and promising.
