The title compound, (Et3NH)2[MnCl4], was obtained unexpectedly in an attempt to prepare a carboxyl-ate-bridged coordination network. It is the first reported structure of a tertiary ammonium salt of the tetra-hedral [MnCl4] 2- anion (Table 1). Each of the two crystallographically independent cations forms an N - H⋯Cl hydrogen bond to the anion (Table 2), generating discrete ion triples. The Mn - Cl bonds involving the hydrogen-bonded Cl atoms are longer than the others. © International Union of Crystallography 2007.
