Abstract

There have been several countries where pipelines have or are being operated with higher design factors (above 0.72). The goal of this presentation is to review the operational experience so that it will benefit the future application of higher design factors. The countries that will be reviewed are 1) the U.S. with grandfathered lines extending from the mid 1950's and covering design factors up to 0.87, 2) the experience in Canada with the adoption of an 0.80 design factor in 1973 allowing for upgrading of existing lines, and 3) the relatively recent experience in the U.K. with upgrading of existing lines.
