Adolescent use and abuse of substances can have serious health consequences, as well as increasing the risks of poorer scholastic attainment, increased delinquency and later psychiatric problems. The recent literature is reviewed, in particular the trends in patterns of use, in psychiatric comorbidity and in the development of preventive measures, and treatment efficacy.
