The UK ASK-IT pilot site is located in the cities of Newcastle and Gateshead in the north east of England. A team of local stakeholders including transport operators, end user groups, local businesses and tourist attractions such as cinemas, shopping centres, museums and art galleries has been assembled to evaluate selected ASK-IT technologies. A range of scenarios have been designed for people to use ASK-IT in real-life situations. This paper will present the main components of the UK site. It will include an overview of the scenarios which are designed to present, test and evaluate the available services. These services include modules designed by the ASK-IT technical development partners, integrated content from a variety of content providers, and the user interfaces and ambient intelligent system developed in the project. Specifically on show at the UK site is outdoor route guidance for pedestrians, journey planning supplied by Transport Direct, point of interest (POI) search and visit using accessibility and social event information collected by the pilot site team, supplied by the POI itself or by DisabledGo, and indoor route guidance and information provision via a specially designed and developed wireless network installed in a local museum. A cohort of end users with various impairments has been recruited to participate in the trials. Newcastle University’s virtual reality (VR) cave is being used to provide a training centre for end user volunteers to familiarise themselves with the mobile devices and the ASK-IT system. This paper provides information about the devices they will be using, and about the status of recruitment, training and evaluation. The trials started in May 2008 and will run until September 2008. Early results of the module tests will be presented in this paper.
