The female pelvic floor is an anatomic and functional complex of three interrelated systems-vesico-urethral, genital and ano-rectal. Diseases and interventions affecting any of these compartments also impact on the others, and diagnostic and outcome evaluations cannot be restricted to one system. Instead, the management of pelvic floor disorders demands a multidimensional approach, and pelvic floor reconstruction requires the expertise of a variety of disciplines, including urology, gynaecology, colorectal surgery and physical therapy. Successful outcomes therefore require either multi-disciplinary co-operation or the development of a trans-disciplinary culture.
