In 1989 the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child made strong declarations regarding children’s rights to consultation and participation in all matters which affect them (Article 12). The right of children to participate is now firmly enshrined in the objectives of children’s organisations such as Save the Children. In the UK there has been a rise of initiatives to encourage children and young people to participate in citizenship issues, the setting up of young peoples forums, school councils etc. In a current piece of research we are focussing on investigating children’s participation in landscape and environmental policy and practice, focussing particularly on structures which facilitate participation in local decision making. This involves extensive research and case studies into the methodologies of conducting research with children and then developing and testing some of theses methodologies in a piece of empirical work. This paper focuses on the background to children’s participation in the landscape and these methodological issues.
