The management of bipolar disorder should be shared between primary care and secondary psychiatric services. In July 2006, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) released The Management of Bipolar Disorder in Adults, Children and Adolescents, in Primary and Secondary Care and this article discusses the main aspects of this guideline, which was produced for the National Health Service (NHS) in England and Wales. There have also been recent changes to the contract for general practitioners in the United Kingdom that will influence care of patients with bipolar disorder and these changes are also summarised.
