Computer-based modelling and simulation have a long-standing role in the design of engineering systems and their associated controls. However, the need to enhance understanding and to improve the design and operation of complex dynamic systems is not constricted to engineering applications. Similarities, differences, adaptations and applications are therefore explored within the context of innovative design and development of management systems and initiatives. It is thereby argued that systemically there is much common ground between the 'hard systems' of engineering science and the 'soft systems' of management social science.
