The accurate prediction of global loads and responses is of great importance to engineers for assessing the safety of a floating platform. In this paper analysis methods to determine the global loads and to assess the safety of Seaways multi-purpose semi-submersible are described. The proposed semi-submersible consists of rectangular cross-sectional members to reduce the construction cost. This study is based on the model testing of a multi-purpose semi-submersible conducted by one of the authors. The tests were carried out to measure rigid-body motions, steady drift phenomena, deck acceleration and mooring forces under wave, wind and current loading. The tests were also carried out in intact and damaged mooring conditions. The measurements were also carried out to determine the behaviour of the damaged platform. In order to predict the wave-induced loads the methods based on the strip theory and 3-D diffraction theory were used in potential and viscous flow. The results were correlated by comparing the numerical predictions with experimental data. The first order wave frequency motions and low frequency motions due to second-order drift forces were calculated. Hydrostatic loads in the still water condition, wave induced loads taking into account the stochastic phenomena of ocean waves and girder stresses of the cylindrical members (pontoons and columns) were determined to investigate the global loads and responses of Seaways multi-purpose semi-submersible. The assessment of the safety against failure due to excessive maximum loads was carried out. During the assessment of the ultimate strength an analytical method developed by the authors and LR prediction algorithms will be used and the results will be correlated.
