The use of Diesel engine simulation models in ship propulsion plant design and operation

Abstract

There are many possible applications of simulation models associated with the design and operation of ships’ propulsion plant. These models cover a wide range of applications extending from support for conceptual design analysis to model based control and predictive maintenance. Due to the scope of applications many different simulation approaches and simulation models are required and some are available. Modelling techniques also vary from CFD modelling for in-cylinder processes analysis to the use of statistical and intelligent techniques such as ANNs for adaptive or predictive control. This paper firstly categorises the approaches and resulting models based on their data requirements, expected modelling efforts and suitability for particular applications. Further, of all major categories case studies are discussed for both modelling and the application. In the discussion the results, advantages/disadvantages and the efforts are compared and benchmarked.
