Abstract

The free rolling experiments to get the GM for a boxbarge , without any hydrostatic data, were carried out, but the results show a big discrepancy with expected value. As Birmingham pointed out, the roll center during oscillation is not fixed to one point, and dynamic effects of a ship like damping and added mass can be changed(Salvesen et al.(1970)). Therefore, the present theory seems to contain some problems that must be improved. It can be concluded that the inclination test is the most reliable one to predict the GM, and it is required to develop some reliable method to assess the weight of a ship in case no hydrostatic data is available for that ship.
