Abstract

For most people the law's power manifests itself... in the details of legal practice, in the thousands of mini-dramas re-enacted every day in lawyers' offices, police stations, and courthouses around the country. The dominant element in almost every one of these mini-dramas is language. To the extent that power is realized, exercised, abused or challenged in such events, the means are primarily linguistic(1).
