What can be deposited?
- Subject to copyright permission, we can accept published papers and unpublished pre-prints, together with working papers, technical reports, book chapters and conference proceedings.
Different disciplines have different methods of delivering their research output, and we have no intention of restricting this service one method or another. All papers are identified by type during the submission process, and so it will always be very clear as to what type of paper (post-print, pre-print, etc) is being viewed at any point. - 90% of journals allow authors to deposit a version of their paper in their institutional repository. In most cases, publishers allow us to deposit the author-produced final version of a paper, rather than the publisher-produced PDF, although there are some exceptions.
- To find out whether you can deposit a paper, the agreement you signed with the publisher may indicate whether or not you are permitted to make your paper available (sometimes called ‘self archiving’) in a repository. Do bear in mind that even if the agreement appears to prevent deposit in a repository, some publishers change their agreements and apply this retrospectively.
- If you don’t have a copy of your agreement, you can search the ROMEO database for a particular journal or publisher to find out their policy on institutional repositories.
- If your publisher or journal is not listed, or if you are unsure about policies, then we will be happy to check for you, and we can contact the publisher directly on your behalf if necessary. We will also be happy to do this for book chapters and other formats.
- If you have research outputs in non-text format (for example, images, artworks, datasets etc) we will be very happy to discuss with you the best way of making these available.
