Studies in French Cinema reflects on the development of French screen studies in the UK over the past twenty-five years and the ways in which innovative scholarship in the UK has influenced the field in English and French speaking universities. This seminal text is also meant as a festschrift of sorts, to acknowledge the contribution of six key figures within the field who have helped shape the direction of research and teaching of French cinema: Jill Forbes, Susan Hayward, Phil Powrie, Keith Reader, Carrie Tarr and Ginette Vincendeau. Studies in French Cinema also considers the potential ‘futures’ of French screen studies, by including new research from both established names within the field, as well as contributions from up and coming academics. The volume contains contributions from: Jennie Cousins, Ann Davies, Julia Dobson, Jill Forbes, Sue Harris, Susan Hayward, Will Higbee, Kate Ince, Sarah Leahy, Douglas Morrey, Martin O'Shaughnessy, Alastair Phillips, Phil Powrie, Keith Reader, Alison Smith, Carrie Tarr, Emma Wilson, Ginette Vincendeau Covering a wide range of key films – contemporary and classical, popular and auteur – the volume provides an invaluable overview for students and scholars of the state of French cinema, and French film studies at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
