The EPSRC funded SECURE (SElf-Conserving URban Environments) project is attempting to address the challenges faced by urban areas and their environs, in the efficient utilisation of limited resources in the future, whilst maintaining quality-of-life for residents. The goal of the project is the development of a Regional Evaluation Framework that is capable of assessing elements of the resource-demand-supply-waste chain at spatial scales from the individual settlement to regional level. Within the framework, three key themes are considered, namely: Urbanisation (land use and transport interaction), Building and Energy Use and Ecosystems Services. The integration of these themes within the framework promotes analysis of the complex interactions between them, with the aim of providing pathways of efficient resource utilisation out to the target year of 2050. This paper focuses on the transport elements of the Urbanisation theme.
