Abstract

Academic COP require transformational and ‘authentic’ leaders rather than leaders usingthe ‘power yielding’ tactics available to formal leaders. By identifying characteristics of leaders in clinical academia, we may be able to recognise and nurture these ‘natural’ leaders. However, as has been seen in business, to provide opportunity for physician growth, there needs to be an understanding and investment in structures that will lay the groundwork for improved performance and leader ship (Kennedy, 2005)
