This chapter provides a brief reflection on the book as a whole together with directions for the future. Realism ‘makes a difference’ by pressing researchers to consider causal mechanisms and suggesting how specific research tools can be deployed to seek out these mechanisms. As an explanatory project, it has made progress in identifying causal powers and in generalizing from cases, but challenges remain here. As an emancipatory project, critical realism needs to reflect on the kinds of policy conclusions that realist research can sustain.
