In this paper the authors discuss three issues of structural crashworthinessof rail vehicles which are in correspondence with the questions enquired bythe reviewers for our two recent publications [1,2]. The three issues whichhave strong influences on the development of crashworthiness of railvehicles are as follows: (1) the robustness of a crashworthy design in thescenarios different from the design conditions; (2) the correlation ofstructural crashworthiness to passenger safety; and (3) behaviourcharacterization of vehicle materials in train collisions. Targeting thedevelopment requirements, an appropriate treatment of these three issuescould generate a promotion on crashworthiness applications and bring anincreased confidence in progressing crashworthiness of rail vehicles.
