Notes: This paper appears in an important volume of work on Celtic Englishes containing chapters by key researchers read at an invitation-only DFG-funded conference which was held at Potsdam University from September 19th-22nd 2001. The intention of the meeting and subsequent volume was to establish an innovative, inter-disciplinary discourse between archaeologists, dialectologists, historical linguists and sociolinguists so as to further our understanding of the crucial significance of Celtic Englishes in the context of their histories and the modern multi-cultural societies in which they are now spoken. My particular contribution, which was independently refereed, focused on presenting a novel analysis of infinitival constructions that were first addressed from a formal generative perspective in Chomsky and Lasnik (1977). This new account adduces a number of detailed arguments and new data from Celtic and other English varieties to argue that the origins and syntactic configuration of this construction (and others like it in the Celtic Englishes) cannot be properly ascertained without adopting the inter-disciplinary perspective advocated in Corrigan (1997/2007), which draws on the fields of dialectology, historical linguistics, generative syntax and sociolinguistics.
