This article places emphasis on functionalism in the social sciences, looking at the development of its main strands: functionalism and structural functionalism. It briefly discusses the criticism, demise,reemergence, and reformulation of functionalism in complexity and system theories, neofunctionalism, and theoretical and methodological developments in a wide range of thematic areas relevant to geography. The article closes with a brief note on the concept of function.
