© VDI Verlag GmbH Düsseldorf 2017.Reducing gear vibration and noise has long been a prime concern for gear designers. In gear research, transmission error (TE) has been used to predict the dynamic performance and noise excitation. It has been investigated for many years, but still research is required to understand the various parameters affecting the transmission error. Among such parameters, overlap ratio is one which has played an important role in determining the variation of transmission error. Thus, this paper is an attempt to study the sensitivity of involute gear TE with different overlap ratios, under the same load intensity, by using a validated 3D-Tooth Contact Analysis (TCA) method. To ensure the results are valid, mesh misalignment and appropriate micro modifications will be applied to the gears. The results from this study provide a recommendation for operating optimal overlap ratio when considering the effect from misalignment caused by manufacturing deviations.
