Virtually every reference to the Greek famine has focused on the Athenian «inferno» of the winter of 1941-42, the responsibility of the German occupation and the loss of 300,000 lives. Nevertheless, we now know that the famine affected many more Greek populations and not exclusively in 1941-42. We know that rural populations suffered from the famine too but also that the German occupation was not solely responsible. What has not been hitherto discussed is the figure of 300,000, a figure that was presented by Constantinos A. Doxiadis in publications of the Greek Ministry of Reconstruction. However, other publications by the same author present different figures that diverge from that of the 300,000. This chapter explores the origins of this figure but also other figures that were put forward, examines how these were used by subsequent researchers and disputes their accuracy.
