Wave energy converters often require the direct conversion of slow speed reciprocating motion into electricity. This poses a challenge to the electrical machine designer, who must devise machines with unusually large radii and small airgaps. In this paper, the development of an electrical power take off for a surface mounted wave energy converter, consisting of two hinged sections, is described. The wave energy converter, electrical machine and power electronic converter development are all presented.
