Borneo is one of the most biodiverse and threatened regions globally. Characterised by its expansive lowland dipterocarp rainforests and high numbers of endemic species across all taxa, the island has experienced rapid and extensive deforestation in recent history. Here we provide an overview of Borneo’s tropical forests and their biodiversity, particularly focusing on the mammals of Borneo. We discuss the numerous human impacts threatening wildlife, including oil palm cultivation, logging, and infrastructure expansion. We also highlight the island’s protected areas and research centres, alongside scientific methods and techniques for measuring and monitoring biodiversity, all of which can make valuable contributions towards biodiversity conservation across Borneo.
