Abstract

This article examines the translation-related activities of Bosnian scholar, politician, and philosopher Rusmir Mahmutćehajić. It situates him within the framework of “dedicated experts”, who act as intercultural agents via literary translation - an activity which is especially crucial for languages such as Bosnian-Croatian-Montenegrin-Serbian (BCMS), where few non-native readers exist. Typically, “dedicated experts” bridge cultures not only through their own translation work but also by cultivating professional networks that enable others to translate. The article focuses on Mahmutćehajić’s role as both producer and facilitator of translations, highlighting his contributions to bilingual editions of Bosnian poetry and religious prose, his involvement in establishing translation studies in the BCMS-reading region, and the international dissemination of his philosophical-political writings in English. Empirical data is drawn from 23 translation-related publications involving Mahmutćehajić, plus analyses of Jones’s own collaborations with him as translator and translation editor. Employing network-based models of social action, the article offers a micro-level case study of translation agency by analysing the mechanisms through which Mahmutćehajić’s intercultural influence has operated.
