Abstract

Little is known about the turbulent flow of pure superfluid. We are investigating this problem numerically by following the motion of a complex tangle of vortex filaments evolving according to the Biot-Savart equation of motion, with the assumption that vortex lines will reconnect upon crossing. We measure the complexity of this vortex tangle by recording the number of closed vortex loops in the tangle and by determining the number of links between these vortex loops. These values change in a characteristic manner as the vortex tangle evolves from the initial conditions (random vortex rings). © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
