Abstract

A study was conducted on the basic processes involved in the decay of quantized vorticity by numerical simulation of vortex ring collisions. As such, the results gave a numerical value for the decay constant that was consistent with preliminary experimental measurements on superfluid helium and atomic condensates in the limit of low temperature. In addition, it was shown that under conditions where vortex reconnections were important a much faster sound-burst dominated decay may be observed.
