Control strategies for process intensified systems

Abstract

This paper considers the design of PID controllers for applications to process intensified systems. Unlike large scale process units, intensified processes have time constants similar to process instrumentation response times. Thus, the dynamics of sensors and actuators have to be included in controller design which, using the IMC approach, yields high order controllers. However, it is shown that simplifications will lead to the classical and the industrial PID forms. Simulation results indicate that their set-point tracking properties are similar to that of the high order controller, but the industrial PID algorithm provided better disturbance rejection. © 2006 ICASE.
