This paper offers a contribution to a debate which offers ways of representing and analysing complex leadership contexts and challenges oversimplistic notions of what it is to be a leader. The paper focuses upon the technique of modelling as a tool for analysing complex scenarios, and shows how modelling may be used to explore leadership issues presented by organisational partnerships for 14-19 education. The first part of the paper is derived from Briggs (2007) 'The use of modelling for theory building in qualitative analysis', the second part from Briggs et al. (2007) 'Leading partnerships for 14-19 educational provision'. © 2008 British Educational Leadership, Management & Administration Society.
