An integrated traffic environment and health management system

Transport problems in Bangkok are characterized by: long queues of waiting vehicles with unpredictable journey times, low level of public transport services, high traffic incidents creating long delays, poor road hierarchy, and high levels of suspended particulates and carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles. These problems have resulted from the rapid growth in economy, family incomes and car ownership. The relief of traffic congestion is no longer the primary policy objective but rather concentration has shifted to address the adverse effect on the community of poor air quality and excessive levels of noise in urban areas. Measures taken to reduce vehicle emissions at source alone is insufficient to solve Bangkok's air quality problems. This was confirmed by a study of short and long term traffic demand management measures commissioned by the Office of the Commission for the Management of Land Traffic
