Abstract

Many benefits associated with the introduction of smart cards are quantifiable in money terms to the provider of the smart card. These benefits have been the basis of business cases for the introduction of such a scheme. However, for the user, there are often ‘soft’ benefits over and above these more easily identified money benefits, for example, the convenience of having one or more applications on a smart card, or the potential to be rewarded by additional use of the smart card. This paper identifies the role of soft benefits in the user perception of smart cards, and the empirical valuation of individual smart card applications.
