A major drawback of transverse flux machines is that they suffer from a low flux ratio. Hence, they are penalized by a low power factor. This has the serious effect of a substantial increase of the rating of the associated converter. The problem of the low flux ratio is due to high leakage fluxes. The paper is devoted to the investigation of the leakage fluxes of a claw pole transverse flux permanent magnet machine whose stator magnetic circuit as well as the rotor core back are made up of a soft magnetic composite. This is carried out using a 3D finite element analysis which has been developed using a 3D-Magnet software package. Furthermore, the reluctances through which the leakage fluxes flow are derived.
