1. The problem - under-performance of ethnic minority candidates, especially (non-EU) International Medical Graduates (IMGs) in the Royal College of General Practitioners’ Clinical Skills Assessment (CSA) tests. A side concern - relationship between UK GP trainers and IMGs.2. Some explanations from social theory - Bourdieu - linguistic capital, social capital, and Du Bois' double consciousness, and from Social Psychology and intercultural communications theory. Celian Roberts and colleagues' ongoing work for the RCGPs -some early indications.3. Why the Calgary-Cambridge Guides (the main communication training tool used by GP trainers with IMGs) may be deficient in addressing some of these problems.4. Ways forward - Interactional Competence (addressing CSA issues) and reflective practice (addressing the trainer-trainee issues):- (a)What is meant by interactional competence.(b) How it can be attained.(c) How data-led reflective practice(where data is actual recordings of doctors' own interactions) is one way of promoting IC.5, Round up – applications and future research avenues.
