Abstract

This paper discusses the design of fault tolerant electric fuel pumps for aircraft. A range of prototype machines in the range 10-20 kW have been built and successfully tested, but fuel pump drives of 100 kW or more will be required for large aircraft. This paper discusses the problems, which arise in extending designs up to this power level, particularly focusing on the problem of induced rotor losses. Changes to the design, in particular the stator, are introduced to improve the performance of these future generations of fault tolerant machine. (12 References).
