Assessing Cantonese-speaking children with language difficulties from the perspective of evidence-based practice: current practice and future directions.

We address three issues related to clinical assessment of children with speech and language difficulties in Hong Kong. First, we review the range of standardized assessments available and report the results of a survey of Speech Therapists working in Hong Kong regarding assessment of Cantonese-speaking children. We then evaluate the psychometric properties of four standardized language tests currently used by Speech Therapists to assess children suspected of having a language impairment. Finally, we outline an evidence-based framework for evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of language tests. We conclude by identifying a set of issues to be considered in advancing the state of evidence-based practice in clinical assessment.
