The switched reluctance machines (SRM) and permanent magnet machines (PMM) are discussed in terms of size and material costs. The PMM is the smallest, lightest motor but the magnet costs are very high as compared to SRM . The aerospace PMM has cobalt laminations and thus a higher per unit flux. The fully pitched SRM is designed to minimize the copper required and hence has more iron in it than usual.
