Abstract

Classroom design has been left behind by rapid evolution in education and learning. But before learning environments can be improved, we need to know exactly what factors go into making a good one. This literature review, prepared by the Centre for Learning and teaching at the University of Newcastle for the Design Council's Learning Environments Campaign, looks in detail at academic research on learning environments and how they affect the people who use them. It highlights areas of common agreement and identifies the issues that divide researchers, as well as giving a number of recommendations for future research to fill gaps in existing knowledge.
